MODERN-DAY NINA
Onycha Holt
The thing that means the
most to Nina is being close to
God. True, she has a fine rela-
tionship with family and
friends, and there are numer-
ous hobbies and interests to
enjoy. There are children and
grandchildren to care for,
neighbors to visit, volunteer work to be done at the
school, church programs to attend, as well as office
work to complete. There never seems to be enough
money or time, so housework limps along and cooking
gets simpler and simpler. In all this hustle and bustle,
Nina has to fight to find time for herself, and when she
does, she loves to spend it with God. Over the years
God has become nearer and dearer to her. Nothing, she
will emphatically tell you, is as satisfying, interesting,
fulfilling, or energizing as communion with God.
It fills her with wonder every time she thinks about
His awesome power and the seemingly limitless uni-
verse He upholds, or about His unsurpassed creativity
and beauty, His deep wisdom and knowledge, His
boundless energy, His perfect judgments, and His sub-
lime plan to secure His universe forever from the self-
ish heart of man and fallen angels.
His throne is high and lifted up. (Isaiah 6:1) Ten
thousand thousands minister unto Him, and constant
activity surrounds Him. (Revelation 5:11) He exists in
light unapproachable. (1 Timothy 6:16) It only takes
His word to bring nonexistent matter into existence
(Genesis 1), and His whisper could send our planet
hurling into the deep recesses of space, millions of gal-
axies away. His eye can reach to the end of the future
and at the same time He knows everything that has ever
happened in the long eons of the past. (Exodus 3:14)
The beauty, and the glory, and the majesty of His king-
dom are beyond her imagination.
In spite of all this, the deepest desire of her heart is
to be near God, to watch as He accomplishes His multi-
tude of tasks, to hear His voice as He speaks worlds into
existence, to be near His mind as He plans and makes
decisions, to see His joy over a new creation, and to feel
His concern over the smallest detail in His kingdom.
She desires this because she loves Him exquisitely, and
so wants to be near Him.
