Woman to Woman
A Complete Change of Focus
for Hearth to Hearth Ministries
By Esther McDaniel
Hearth to Hearth
Ministries began its
ministry in 1998 with
the publication of the
Sept./Oct. issue of
Hearth to Hearth
magazine (shown at
left). As my friend,
Grace Cox, and I dis-
cussed the idea of
putting out a publica-
tion for women, it seemed as though everything just fell into
place as though God had smiled on the whole idea.
We had no doubts about the fact that Grace would be the
one to put together the content of the paper and I would do the
layout and see that it got published. Grace also took on the re-
sponsibility of doing the bookkeeping, maintaining the mail-
ing list and mailing the papers out, while I set about to try to
learn how to do some desktop publishing. Surely God was
with us in those early days or this paper would have never
made it from dream to reality. For one thing, we were two “old
dogs,” trying to learn “new tricks” on a new-to-us invention
called a Home PC with cyberspace capabilities. Seemingly
impossible obstacles just melted away as we prayerfully took
one baby step after another toward publishing the first issue.
Our first mailing list was made up of all our friends and rela-
tives who graciously read our query, “May We Come In?” and
invited us into their homes and hearts.
In the Nov./Dec. issue of 2001, we introduced a work for
east African orphans. This work grew rapidly until, today,
we have actually begun building two schools (primary and
secondary), for the Hope for Children Center in Kenya, at a
location we had only dreamed about less than two years ago.
In addition to building an orphanage for these children (now
numbering over 200), God has taken the work a step further
so that we are now working with still another orphanage in
Kenya, plus doing a work for widows and orphans in two ar-
eas of Uganda.
In January of this year, due to the fact that the orphan
work was taking over so much space in Hearth to Hearth,we
separated that work out of this paper and began a newsletter
entitled Spotlight on Orphans, especially for the orphan work.
Now, as we consider our past history and where we stand
today in the stream of time, we are wondering if perhaps God
brought this magazine into existence in the beginning, sim-
ply to be a vehicle to begin this important work with His or-
phaned children of east Africa.
Of one thing we are sure, it is now time for Hearth to
Hearth Ministries to bring this avenue of its ministry to a
close and focus solely on our work with orphans, inviting
theminto our homes, to bask in the warmth of our “hearths.”
