Early Morning Reverie
By Dorthy Hart
I was out walk-
ing in the woods
very early one morn-
ingwhenIcame
upon a good resting place beside a clump of touch- me-nots
(jewelweed). It was nearly dawn. The bird choir had already
started singing its songs of praise, accompanied by the back-
ground music of the babbling brook. A very peaceful envi-
ronment, indeed.
Soon the sun’s rays penetrated the heavy treetop canopy
and lightbeams painted the already lovely jewelweed blos-
soms with a glorious glow against the background of the for-
est floor.
I put up my hammock to discourage the bugs, and
crawled inside to read my Bible and Thoughts from the
Mount of Blessing, which I had brought along. As the morn-
ing wore on, I kept noticing that the little plants all around
me moved; not as if the wind was blowing them, but their
petals and leaves changed positions to follow the sun as it
made its way across the sky.
It reminded me of our attitudes in relation to Jesus, our
Son of Righteousness. The plants turn their faces to the sun
for warmth and nourishment. We turn our eyes of faith to-
ward our Son of Righteousness to get our spiritual warmth
and nourishment. As the sun moved, they moved. As Christ
moves about in His work in the heavenly sanctuary, we fol-
low Him with our eyes of faith. Each morning these plants
reposition themselves from where they were the night before
and start their movements all over again. Each morning we
greet our Savior in our hour of prayer, and reposition our
lives and begin all over again. He is the potter; I am the clay.
These plants were created by God, and so were
we—though for a different purpose. The plants are doing
what they were created to do by the “natural law” that God
built into them. Are we doing what we were created to do by
“moral law”? by the Word that was spoken into us?
“And God said, let us make man in our image, after our
likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea,
and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all
the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon
the earth. So God created man in his own image, in the image
of God created he him; male and female created he them.”
(Genesis 1:26-29)
He made the flowers to grow and be the kind of flower they
are, and arranged for them to be fruitful and to multiply. He told
us to be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, subdue it
and have dominion over it. He provided the nourishment that
plants would need. Likewise He told us, “I have given you ev-
ery herb bearing seed, which is upon the face of all the earth,
and every tree, in the which is the fruit of a tree yielding seed; to
you it shall be for meat [food].” (Genesis 1:29)
