A Page from My Experience
One
Snowy
Night
By Lorene Mancuso
My work site was a lonely
spot, about a mile from the
Idaho/Canadian border, two miles
from The Dirty Shame Saloon,
and five miles into the woods. It
was there, one cold snowy night
while on security duty for the rail-
road, that I experienced so profoundly the nearness of God’s
presence. His words, “I will never leave thee nor forsake thee”
(Hebrews 13:5), became very real and personal during my
hours alone so deep into the wilderness.
While getting ready to go to work that afternoon, I looked
out the window and watched the snow falling very heavily. I
could actually see the inches piling up. I prayed with confi-
dence that all would be well during my trip to the job site. I
even felt excited because had God not promised that He’d
take care of everything? Well, then, He would!
I gathered and put all the things I would need in the
car—food, tape player, tapes, Bible, flashlight and extra batter-
ies. I made sure I had the shovel and car chains—just in case.
At two-thirty in the afternoon it was time to go. As I
started the car, I bowed my head and told my Father that I was
afraid to drive in those conditions. I asked would He please
take over all my actions and thoughts, and told Him I would
trust Him completely. And off I went. While on the road, I
continually sensed His presence reminding me, “Don’t be
afraid, I am with you.” Such wonderfully sweet thoughts! I
lifted my voice and sang hymns as I drove.
Next thing I knew I was turning off the highway to go up
into the mountains, and it began snowing harder. The trees
and electric wires were sagging under the weight of the snow.
The stark white beauty of the landscape reminded me what a
great and perfectArtist, how supreme and magnificent my Fa-
ther is in all that He does. I came to the Dirty Shame where I
would turn off onto the road to my site. It wasn’tplowed at all,
and the ruts looked awfully deep for my little Toyota Corolla.
I had given my word that I would be there so, trusting God to
make sure I didn’t get stuck, I went ahead. A surprise flashed
through my mind: “Look at this, it’s not even rubbing bot-
tom!” I will NEVER leave thee, nor forsake thee.
I arrived at the site in plenty of time. Two of the crew had
waited for me, to explain that I needed to be about another half
mile further where the tracks crossed the creek. I would have
to walk there. I got my flashlight, since it was dusk, and
started walking up the tracks.
I found the small fire the crew had left. It had almost, but
not quite, gone out. If I wanted to try to keep it going I would
need to gather wood. The snow was falling harder and the
wind was beginning to pick up; probably more storm was on
the way. I had noticed some dried Queen Anne’s Lace poking
through the snow. I gathered as much of it as my arms could
